Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

By Lewis Carroll

1881

Macmillan and Co. : London

7.5" by 5"

192pp. (1)

DETAILS

A scarce early edition of this highly influential work of children's fiction, complete with the original charming illustrations by John Tenniel.

With publisher's advertisement to the rear of the work. Sixty Seventh Thousand. Complete, with forty two charming illustrations by John Tenniel depicting the many much-loved scenes including The Mad Hatter's Tea Party and The White Rabbit looking at his pocket watch. Upon the original publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, Tenniel was far more well-known than Carroll, owing to his successful career as an illustrator and cartoonist, including many pieces for the satirical periodical 'Punch'. Tenniel also illustrated the sequel, 'Alice Through The Looking Glass' and the coloured revised illustrations for 'The Nursery Alice'. Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson) was a mathematician and author best known for this work, and its sequel 'Alice Through the Looking-Glass'. The work is credited as perhaps the greatest example of literary nonsense and whilst the work was meant for children (indeed the tale was originally told to a friend's daughter, Alice Liddell) the word play, logic and fantastical themes present in the work have interested and delighted scholars since its publication. This work is a scarce and early example of an influential and charming piece of Victorian children's literature.

I have in my hand the book which has arrived safely and in record time. Thank you for your nice letter and I will most certainly follow up in the future all the new additions to your library. The book is better than your description-clean with crisp pages and not damaged and with a fragrance of bygone days.My instinct for choosing Rooke Books has been correct and I have now a reliable establishment should I need any interesting books to purchase. My appreciation for the professional way you handled everything.

What Our Customers Say...

Perfect customer service.

Elizabeth, UK

For Christmas, I ordered a set of 200 year old encyclopedias on the history of Great Britain for my wife.  She absolutely loved them.  They were exactly as advertised and she went crazy over their smell.  I believe this has set us on the path of collecting older books and such and I have no doubt we will be repeat customers in the future. Thank you very much for helping me provide my wife a wonderful Christmas gift while I am deployed.

Michael, UK

Many thanks for the book which I received safely today, very well packaged and minutely tracked by DHL. It is as fascinating as I had hoped!

David, UK

The book arrived safely, and your description was spot-on. I appreciate that attention to detail which is all too infrequent among today's booksellers.
