What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Original Binding

A second edition copy of John Ruskin's 'Sesame and Lilies' published in the same year as the first edition (1865) complete with 23-page preface and publisher's ads. This copy contains two lectures 'delivered at Manchester in 1864' by Ruskin: 'Of Kings' Treasuries' and 'Of Queens' Gardens'. Both widely popular within the period, 'Of Kings' Treasuries' was delivered in support of library funding, exploring issues of cultural value of texts, reading practices and education, whilst 'Of Queens' Gardens' was delivered in support of a school fund, focusing on the role of women in Victorian society. However, within modern feminist criticism Ruskin's second lecture has been repeatedly critiqued, with many arguing that within this lecture Ruskin attempts to 'confine' women to the 'domestic sphere'.
