A charming four volume set of the work of British poets. In these volumes R Brimley Johnson compiles a comprehensive list of British ballad writing. This form of verse, usually accompanied by music, are typical of the medieval periods, though they continued to be a popular form throughout to the 18th century. Volumes I and II include the best of traditional ballads from England and Scotland. Whilst volumes III and IV include later ballads from across Britain, with a more experimental style. With illustrations throughout by W C Cooke. Acquired from a sale of the publisher J.M Dent's reference library, with this works being 'File Copies'. With 'File Copy' stamps to several leaves. Joseph Malaby Dent was a British book publisher best known for the Everyman's library series.

Condition

In a full cloth bindings with gilt detailing to the front boards and to the spine. Externally smart. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine of each volume, as well as to the extremities Small amount of loss to the front and rear joints of volume IV, due to rubbing. Sunning to each of the spine, with fading also to the front and rear boards of volumes III and IV. Spotting to the foredge and bottomedge of each volume. Offsetting to the front and rear endpapers of each volume. Stamp to the front endpaper of each volume. Some spotting to the rear pastedowns of each volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the occational spot throughout. The last pages of volume I and II remain uncut.
