The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D.

By James Boswell

c1851 - London - Office of The National Illustrated Library

7.5" by 5"; (xxxii) 291pp, (v) 298pp; (vi) 298pp, (vi) 300pp.

DETAILS

A complete and very decorative four volume set of Boswell's The Life of Samuel Johnson, bound into two volumes.

This is the deluxe and rather uncommon binding in full gilt.

Boswell's Life of Johnson is widely regarded as one of the most important and acclamed biographies ever to have been written, and an early forerunner of the genre, despite the dubious ommisions from the original interviews with Johnson. It is nonetheless seen as a very important source, regardless of the critical liberties taken by the author.

Here, the volumes are set in ornate binding, and profusely illustrated throughout with engraved plates and vignettes.

CONDITION

In decoative morocco binding with gilt detailing. Externally sound, there is wear to the boards, joints, extremities and backstrip. Internally, the pages are firmly bound and are generally bright and clean throughout, aside from the odd marking, spot and some creasing. Overall: VERY GOOD.

What Our Customers Say...

Norman, UK

Just to let you know that the book arrived safely yesterday, and that I am very pleased with it. The condition of the book is excellent and the dustwrapper (which with this book is more often 'tatty') is almost perfect. Nice transaction I would say.

Swethaa, Abu Dhabi

I just got my book in the post - what a delightful piece! Thank you for your quick and prompt service.
