Fine Binding, Illustrated, Leather Binding
In a sumptuously tooled morocco binding. Illustrated, with a frontispiece and nineteen chromolithographic plates. Appears to have been bound without he plate 'The Sally in Which Mr Tradition, Mr Human-Wisdom, and Mr Man's-invention were taken Captive.' The plate 'The Prince Talking to Mr Conscience has been bound at page 260 with the plate 'Diabolus Talking to Mansoul' bound in page page 340. With a life of the author by George Cheever and an introductory essay on 'The Pilgrim's Progress' by James Montgomery. This work contains 'The Pilgrim's Progress', 'The Holy War', 'Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners', 'The Jerusalem Sinner Saved', 'Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ', 'The Saints' Privilege and Profit', 'THe Water of Life', 'The Barren Fig-Tree' and 'Bunyan's Last Sermon'. 'The Pilgrim's Progress' is esteemed as being a significant work of religious English literature. It was first published in 1678 and has been in print ever since. Some scholars refer to this work as the first novel written in English. A beautifully bound collection of this influential Puritan preacher's works.
Condition
In the original tooled morocco binding with four cartouches to the front and rear boards. To these there are gilt stamped designs from Bunyan's works. Externally, smart. Patches of rubbing to the raised bands and to the extremities. Front hinge is strained but firm. Front endpaper has been removed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spots.
