DETAILS

A scarce English dictionary by William Perry from the works of Samuel Johnson.

Bound in leather with gilt lettering and decoration.

The complete title for this work is: The Synonymous, Etymological and Pronouncing English Dictionary; in which the words are deduced from their originals, Their Part of Speech distinguished, their Pronunciation pointed out, and their Syonyma collected, which are occasionally illustrated in their different significations, by examples from the best writers; Extracted from the Labours of the late Dr. Samuel Johnson; Being an attempt to Synonymise his Folio Dictionary of the English Language.

To which is prefixed an English Grammar. 

With a small nameplate and ink inscription to the front free-endpaper, stating "Benjamin Haynes, formerly of Coventry. Citizen of the United States of America 1863 - 1885". The address on the nameplate is Paterson, N.J.

With articles from newspapers, journals, et al, relating to various political and social matters, including The National Begging Scheme, and Radicalism, Socialism and or Revolution stuck to the free-endpapers and blanks.

 Little is known about the author, William Perry.

CONDITION

The textblock binding is generally tight and firm. The front board is detached, and the rear hinge is starting. The rear inner hinge is slightly strained. There is wear to the extremities, including rubbing and edge wear with marks and slight loss. The spine is split between the pages Fon-Foo/Fop-For. Internally the pages have some browning and foxing. There is a small closed tear to the title page. Overall the condition is fair with a good interior.
