What Our Customers Say...

Description

Leather Binding

Full calf leather binding. Richard Allestree (1621/2–1681), was a Church of England clergyman. Allestree's influence on the late seventeenth-century church may owe less to his preaching or his university lectures than to the series of moral and devotional works initiated by The Whole Duty of Man (1657). The Whole Duty of Man was intended to show ‘the very meanest readers’ how ‘to behave themselves so in this world that they may be happy for ever in the next’. This best-selling manual's prescription of morality and effort was balanced by an emphasis on divine grace and devotional practice: the result was sober, orthodox, common-sense advice pitched at the level of ordinary Anglican parishioners. This was an anonymous work and although it rapidly won acclaim among Allestree's peers, its authorship remained a mystery.

Condition

Full calf leather binding. There is some wear to the extremities, including some chips to the spine and edges of the boards. The corners are also bumped and the front outer hinge is cracked. The binding is tight and firm and both covers are attached, though the front board is attached by one cord only. The front inner hinge is strained but holding. Internally the book is clean and bright apart from some isolated spots and handling marks. There is a copperplate inscription and an ownership plate to the front paste down.
