Containing folk tales, fairy tales and ghost stories by such renowned authors as Motte-Fouque, Tieck, Masaus, Apel, and Benedikte Naubert. Complete in three volumes and rebound in a half polished calf binding with marbled paper boards, endpapers and textblock. Featuring a charming vignette to the the title page of each volume, by the renowned English painter and illustrator George Cattermole. Containing the following works to each volume: Volume I: The Treasurer-Seeker; The Bottle-Imp; The Sorcerers; The Enchanted Castle; Wake Not The Dead. Volume II: The Spectre Barber; The Magic Dollar; The Collier's Family; The Victim Of Priestcraft; Kibitz. Volume III: The Field Of Terror; Elfin-Land; The Tale; The Fatal Marksman; The Hoard Of The Nibelungen; The Erl-King's Daughter. With a tipped-in bookplate of a 'James St. Aubyn' to the front pastedown of each volume.

Condition

Rebound in a half polished calf binding with marbled paper boards, endpapers and textblock. Externally rubbed, with slight loss to leather to extremities. Spine labels partially detached and lacking to all volumes, more severe to volume I. The odd mark to boards. Split to joints to head of spines. Front hinges slightly split and strained. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned but bright and clean with the odd spot, heavier to first and last few pages. Prior owner's ink inscription to front endpaper.
