Wyndham, John

John Wyndham was a pioneering English science fiction writer. He is best known for his first four full novels being 'The Day of the Triffids' (1951), 'The Kraken Wakes' (1953), 'The Chrysalids' (1955) , and 'The Midwich Cuckoos' (1957). Of these it is the first, 'The Day of the Triffids' which is the best known today. It drew on Wyndham's experience as a fire watcher in the London Blitz. But it is 'The Chrysalids' which is often considered his best work. Its post nuclear dystopian oppression of women is an acknowledged source for Margaret Attwood's Handmaid's tale. Wyndham's themes have stood the test of time extremely well. Both with the accidental release of the genetic engineering of the Triffids and the (alien caused) global warming of the Kraken wakes.
