What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Limited Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Signed, Uncommon, With Dustwrapper

Frederick Soddy was a prolific English radiochemist who notably collaborated with Ernest Rutherford in demonstrating that radioactivity is due to the transmutation of elements. This discovery notably led to the Disintegration Theory, that has served as the foundation of many other nuclear discoveries. He also completed extensive research in radioactive decay and developed a theory of isotopes that resulted in him being awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1921. Muriel Howarth was Professor Soddy's literary trustee, biographer, and friend who worked closely with the Nobel Laureate during the formative years of his atomic research. This work therefore contains both a fascinating discussion of science and its impact on the philosophy of life, and also reveals the life, emotions, and personal life of its subject. Complete with the original unclipped dustwrapper and a loosely inserted review of the work and a publisher's advertisement for the work. Collated, complete with forty black and white illustrations to the rear of the work, and a frontispiece plate of Soddy facing the half title page. This copy is signed and numbered by Howarth to the half title page, and features the following tipped-in slip: 'Numbered first edition The first hundred copies of this book have been numbered and signed by request from admirers of Frederick Soddy. This is number 5'. The work is also features a facsimile of Howarth's ink signature to page 279, the final page of the main biography. This copy features an additional protective card dustwrapper with a bookplate of a ' Dr. Frederick Kurzer' tipped the verso, and a loosely inserted 'Request for a Book' slip for Kurzer from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine Library' dated 1985. Frederick Kurzer was a renowned senior lecturer and reader in chemistry at the Royal Free hospital school of medicine, and a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry for more than 70 years. He produced many notable papers on the chemical work of Samuel Parkes, Charles Tomlinson, and William Hasledine Pepys, and also studied the numerous scientific activities of the Surrey and London Institutions in the nineteenth century.
