A new edition. In the publisher's original cloth binding. With a frontispiece, engraved title page and forty-one beautiful illustrations from R. Seymour and Hablot Knight Browne 'Phiz'. Collated complete. 'The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club' was Charles Dickens' first novel. The story originated from a request by the publisher, Chapman & Hall, to compose a novel linking together a series of 'cockney sporting plates' by the illustrator Robert Seymour. The book became a publishing phenomenon, with theatrical performances, joke books and other merchandise. With an ink inscription dated 1900 for one 'Harry Goodman by the Manchester Jew's School', to the front free endpaper.
Condition
In the original cloth binding. Externally, smart with shelf wear to the extremities and spine. A few marks to the boards. Ink inscription to the front free endpaper. The front free endpaper is loosening but still firm. Internally, firmly bound. Several pages are uncut throughout. Several pages are torn, but this does not affect the text. Age-toning to the edges but otherwise bright. Marks to pages 132 and 133.
