Description
Leather Binding, Rebound, Scarce
William Sandys is best remembered for collating and publishing a collection of seasonal carols under the title 'Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern'. This work was notable for containing the first appearances of many now-classic English carols, such as "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen", and "The First Noel". The 'Percy Society' was a British text publication society founded in 1840, with the aim to publish limited-edition books of rare poems and songs. The Society largely drew on manuscripts from the British Museum, the Bodleian Library, the Ashmolean Museum, the Pepys collection (Cambridge), The Douce collection (Oxford), and their own private collections. With a list of the members of the council (and the members) of the 'Percy Society' to the front of the text.
