What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

Rebound, in a stunning half calf binding with marbled boards. With half title. These critical essays, which have been written by 'gentlemen of distinguished literary talents' and 'theatrical amateurs' have been compiled by James Bisset of Birmingham. Jams Bisset was a Scottish-born manufacturer, artist and poet who was a notable figure in Birmingham's cultural and commercial life. He was a prominent member of the Birmingham Book Club. A very scarce work. Undated, dated using the British library entry on copac, 1805. Other entries, including the University of Oxford, state this work to be from 1804. These essays regard Master Betty or 'the young Roscius'. Betty was a popular child actor of the nineteenth century. He showed his desire for the stage from the age of eleven and his first role was Osman in Voltaire's 'Zair'. Other roles played include Young Norval in John Home's 'Douglas' and Hamlet. These essays were published at the start of Betty's career, and Bisset notes to the editor's preface 'the editor does not wish to influence or to bias the minds of the public- his only aim is to enable them to judge for themselves'. A good example of this very scarce work.
