What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Original Binding, Pleasing Copy, Very Scarce

Curtis was a renowned nineteenth century otologist who served as the Aurist to King George IV and as a lecturer on the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the ear. However, Curtis actually lacked any medical qualifications and, according to the DNB, 'his ideas and practice were a mixture of charlatan and of applied common sense'. Nonetheless he founded the first specialist ear hospital in Britain on nearby Carlisle Street and was widely praised for inventing several new surgical instruments for operations on the ear and for introducing a variety of improvements for assisting hearing. This work contains instructional directions to preserving health in relation to 'the four states of man- Infancy, Youth, Manhood, and Senility'. With author's advertisements to the rear of the work. Featuring a portrait frontispiece of 'Mr. West and Family' from a print in the collection of John Curtis.
