Description
Colour Plates, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
The second edition of this work. This work was adapted from a comic series originally written for 'Punch', documenting William Makepeace Thackeray's trip to the East. Thackeray shows his talent for comic and satirical writing in this account of his travelling to the East, documenting his whole journey. He discussed Lisbon, Cadiz, Gibraltar, Athens, Constantinople, Rhodes, Syria, Jerusalem, and Cairo. This work shows the increasing interest in the East from the British people in the nineteenth century. The interest was growing due to the British Empire and trade, and also due to the booming genre of travel books that were a great love of the public in this era. Though Michael Angelo Titmarsh is stated at the author on the title page, this work was written by William Makepeace Thackeray under the pseudonym. Thackeray started travelling after graduating from Cambridge. His other travel works include 'The Paris Sketch Book'. These travel books established his success as a writer, as well as his writing for 'Punch', and allowed him to start writing his novels. Thackeray is a prolific author, who is best known for his novel 'Vanity Fair'. He was known for his satirical works on society. With a hand-colour frontispiece. With an engraving to the title page. This work is a duodecimo, with the signatures being divided into six. The first six leaves with no signature. The signatures run from A-R6, S3. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper, 'Julia Smythe'. Though it is unlikely, this could possibly be Julia Smythe, who was the mistress of H. H. Holmes and was murdered by him in 1891. With twenty-four pages of publisher's adverts to the rear.
