To this set is Volume I parts I and II, Volume II parts I and II, Volume III part I, Volume IV part I and II, and the Supplement Volumes I-IV. Therefore, Volume III part II is lacking. A first edition set. This work was written by John Marshall, an officer in the British Navy who turned to writing biographies of British naval officers. Much of the information to these volumes were contributed by the officers themselves, although Marshall included copies of official private letters and other authoritative documents. To his preface Marshall writes that this work was inspired by 'a natural wish to become acquainted, to a certain degree, ith the characters of my contemporaries ina profession to which I am most ardently attached and to which almost all my life has been devoted'. With the bookplate of G E Maunsell to the front pastedown of all volumes. Collated, lacking Volume III part II. Otherwise, complete. With the errata to all volumes. Ten cancel leaves to volume I part II between pages 663 and 667 which are numerated 663*, 663**, 664, 664*, 664**, 665 *, 665 **, 666, 666* and 666**. To volume III part I there is bound 'Naval operations in Ava Durine Burmese War 1830' which is dated 1830. This is bound to the rear. A very smart set of this scarce work. It is uncommon to have such a large set of this work, particularly with the supplements.
