First Edition, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

In a very smart half calf binding, with marbled boards. The first and only edition of this work. A scarce work, usually found as later re-prints. There has not been a copy recorded at auction since 1999. This work provides numerous accounts of insubordination by officers in the Royal Navy during the nineteenth century. Biden writes to the preface 'I have every confidence the most prejudiced person will yield to the necessity of our maritime interests being protected and governed by an efficient code of laws'. There are discussions of mutinous crews and much worse. Biden mentions that some of the discipline on Naval ships have been too rigorous at times There are many discussions on mutinies covered by the press at the time such as the ship Inglis and the Kate and how they have tarnished the reputation of the Navy. Biden demonstrates how the current means of preserving efficient control are defective. He uses examples such as the Criterion, the Lady Raffles and The Abberton. A useful contemporary source regarding discipline and laws at sea during the nineteenth century.

Condition

In a contemporary half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart with light shelfwear to the boards. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, referencing pages 238 and 211. Two further ownership inscriptions to the recto of front endpaper dated 1862 and 1883.
