This review copy has the slip loosely inserted stating that this copy was for the editor of Country Life Magazine. Below this is stamped the publication date of Nov 8 1917. to the title page there is a compliments stamp ' With the Publishers' Compliments'. Illustrated, with twenty-four plates. Collated, complete. This work is formed of Sir Charles Napier's letters in addition to a biography by H Noel Williams. To the verso of the illustration leaf there is a letter printed from Charles Beresford to Sir Charles Napier's granddaughter, Mrs Gooch stating 'No man has ever been treated worse by politicians than Admiral Sir Charles Napier. He was a splendid seaman, and affords one of the instances where the politicians are always doing their best to lose the Empire, and the Navy and Army save it at the critical moment.' Napier was in the Royal Navy for sixty years and he served in the War of 1812, the Napoleonic Wars, Syrian War and the Crimean War. He was a strong advocate of reform in the Royal Navy and was a famed officer in the early Victorian Era. This work looks at the lengthy career of this great serviceman.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with just some light shelfwear to the head and tail of spine in addition to the extremities. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Stamp to the title page from the publisher. Publisher's compliments slip loosely inserted. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the occasional scattered spots, mostly to the fore edge.
