Description

Early Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Written by Thomas J Main and Thomas Brown. Main was the Mathematical Professor at the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth. With a frontispiece and two plates, as called for. Collated, complete. An uncommon work in any edition, this work discusses leading makers of steam engines, such as the likes of Fairbairn, Maudslay, Boulton and Watt steam engines. With a frontispiece illustrating one of John Penn and Son's 1,350 h.p trunk engines built for H M SS Minotaur and Northumberland. Main and Brown have penned many practical chapters regarding the functioning of the machinery and definitions of terms, but they also have some more descriptive chapters on how to get up steam expeditiously; the problems of priming, and their remedies; ashes escaping from the funnel, or flames appearing at the top of it; remedies proposed if shot should enter the boiler during an action; effect of shot upon funnels; coaling ship; and the technique of a steamer in chase. With several tables to the rear providing valuable information regarding the qualities of a great quantity of named coals from identified collieries. Other tables list respectively the screw steamers, paddle steamers, and steam gun-boats in the Royal Navy, giving make and power of their engines and other specifications.
