The first edition. Collated complete with three collotype plates and thirty eight half tone and line plates. Uncommon. Hugh Pollard was an author, firearms expert and British Officer. He is perhaps best known for his highly important intelligence work during the Irish War of Independence. Pollard was a much published expert regarding firearms and their handling, having first written a small arms section in the official War Office textbook. This detailed work was considered for many years the ultimate survey of firearms and is still considered an indispensable reference for military and social historians, gun collectors and firearms enthusiasts. The work detail the evolution of both military and sporting guns, including their manufacture and use from medieval times to present day.
In the original red cloth binding. Externally very smart with slight rubbing to the boards and extremities. Slight fading to the spine. The odd mark to the board. Very light tidemarks to the spine. Offsetting to endpapers. Ink inscription to front pastedown dated 1944. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with marginal age toning.
