What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Scarce

A beautifully illustrated work, providing many examples of military costume in Europe. A very scarce work, with only three copies listed on LibraryHub, held at the National Trust, the V and A Museum and the National Museums Scotland library. Lacking the title page to volume II, as well as the plate/contents leaves for both volumes. Each plate has an accompanying leaf of text, explaining the costume, the regiment, and a brief history. This work has been bound in alphabetical order in contrast to the order it was intended to be upon initial publication. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front free endpaper, George W Hill, Stony Stretton Hall Shropshire. Comprising of 84 hand coloured plates of 97.

Condition

In a half calf binding, with cloth covered boards. Externally, rebacked with the original spine and boards preserved. Rubbing to the extremities and to the spine. Hinges are strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper, George W Hill, Sony Stretton Hall October 1st 1900. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with just the odd spots to pages.
