What Our Customers Say...
Description
Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon
Mornings in Florence was first published c.1875, and first published by Tauchnitz Editions in 1907. This edition is undated, however the monthly catalogue of Tauchnitz Editions' latest volumes which forms its rear cover dates this copy as being from October 1925.
A Tauchnitz Edition: Tauchnitz Editions were produced by a family of German printers and publishers who sought to distribute English language works across the European continent, often with English-speaking travellers in mind. Tauchnitz Editions were an essential driving force for developments in international copyright law.
Includes two undated ticket stubs from a previous owner's trip to Florence.
Uncommon, and especially scarcely found bound in paper as with this copy.
John Ruskin was a truly prolific English polymath who was responsible for impressive developments in the study of art, botany, political economy, history, and education. Ruskin has more latterly regained widespread intellectual interest for having anticipated the current interest in environmentalism, sustainability, ethical consumerism, and craft. Mornings in Florence is a marvellously dynamic and engaging guide to the art of Florence. In it, Ruskin displays a particular fascination with the work of Giotto, however also imagines whisking his reader around the city to see gothic niches, church frescos, and painted glass.
Condition
Bound in the publisher's original paper covers. Externally, sound with some age toning and very light, scattered spotting. Bumping and creasing, heaviest to the head and tail of the spine, as well as rubbing to the joints which has resulted in some splitting of the paper cover at the spine's tail. Minor creasing to the extremities in addition to rubbing at the fore edge. Some light handling marks. Hinges slightly strained, front hinge more so. Internally, generally firmly bound with the majority of pages bright and clean. The odd spot to the endpapers and towards the rear of the work, some minor creasing of the pages, and a minor tidemark at the centre tail of the spine which has caused light cockling throughout the work in this area, not impacting text.
