Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, and a American polymath; renowned as an author, printer, political theorist, politician, freemason, postmaster, scientist, inventor, humorist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. Containing Franklin's correspondence, his philosophical, political, and moral letters and essays, and his diplomatic transactions. This work was edited by Benjamin Franklin's grandson, William Temple Franklin, with a fascinating preface and additional chapters on the life and works of the Founding Fathers of the United States. With several in-text illustrations to both volumes, and: A portrait frontispiece plate of Benjamin Franklin, an engraved vignette to title page, and a facsimile plate of the handwriting of Franklin to volume I. A frontispiece plate, an engraved vignette to title page, four full page plates, and eight folding plates to volume II.

Condition

In a full speckled calf binding, with marbled endpapers and textblock. Externally generally smart, with rubbing to extremities, joints and spine and handling marks to boards. Fading to spine, as expected with this colour binding. Slight cracking to leather of spine. Hinges slightly strained but reasonably firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages age toned to extremities but generally bright and clean. The odd spot to the occasional page, heavier to first and last few pages. Contemporary prior owner's ink inscription to title page, dated '1839'. The odd handling mark to the occasional page.
