First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

First thus, the first edition of this work with these illustrations. This work has been translated from the original French by Dulcie Lawrence Smith. Illustrated by Eileen Lawrence Smith. In the original quarter vellum binding with paper covered boards. With ribbon bookmark present. Held in the original, very scarce slipcase. 'Aucassin et Nicolette' is anonymous and is the unique example of a chantefable, which is a 'sung story'. It therefore is a combination of prose and verse. It was discovered by medievalist Jean-Baptiste de la Curne de Saint-Palaye.

Condition

In a quarter vellum binding with paper covered boards. Held in the original slipcase. Externally, very smart with a few handling marks to the vellum. A few spots to the boards. Slipcase has the title to the board. Rubbing to the extremities of the slipcase. Scattered spots to the boards. Minor splits to the extremities. Offsetting to the endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
