'John Halifax, Gentleman' was first published in 1856. It is set in the fictional town of Norton Bury in Gloucestershire, which is a loose disguise for Tewkesbury. The story is narrated by Phineas and follows the orphan John Halifax, who is determined to make his way in the world. Written by Dinah Craik, an English novelist who is best known for his work. She also received great success from her novels 'Cola Monti' and 'The Ogilvies'. With a frontispiece by J. E. Millais. Millais was an English painter who was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In an armorial binding from the Presbyterian Ladies' College in Sydney, a signed binding by Angus & Robertson, Sydney. Presentation label to the front pastedown, 'Presbyterian Ladies' College, Sancte Sapienter, Sydney. First Prize. Condition

In an full calf singed armorial binding by Angus & Robertson, Sydney. Externally, generally smart. Marking has caused a little loss of leather to the boards, with some further light marking and tide-marking to the boards. Minor rubbing to the raised bands and to the spine. Front hinge is starting but firm, and the rear hinge is strained. Presentation label to the front pastedown, 'Presbyterian Ladies' College, Sancte Sapienter, Sydney. First Prize. The gift of the College Council awarded to Grace Murray for Improvement in Writing, John Kinons D.D. Chairman, ... Principal, Christmas 1895'. A little loss of paper to the rear endpaper to the gutter. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, though with some scattered spots. Light offsetting to the title page due to the frontispiece. Ink annotation to the margin of page 9.
