What Our Customers Say...
Description
Early Edition, First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding
Illustrated, with a frontispiece and pictorial title page from designs by D G Rossetti. The second edition of this work. Comprising of the titular poem, and numerous additional poems and devotional pieces. This work was Rossetti's first publication. This is therefore the second edition of her important poem, 'Goblin Market'. The poem was composed in 1859, and is Rossetti's longest poem. It is the most widely known and read of all her works and launched her literary career. It is believed that 'Goblin Market' inspired Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. 'Goblin Market' explores themes of temptation, sacrifice and salvation. Biographers and critics have argued that the themes of temptation, sexual exchange and sisterly redemption in this poem are influenced by its poet’s experience working as an ‘Associate Sister’ at Highgate (British Library). It tells the story of Laura and Lizzie who are tempted with fruit by Goblin merchants. An extremely smart, and very bright copy of this important poem.
