Colour Plates, Fine Binding, First Edition, Illustrated

All volumes are undated and are therefore dated using the British Library and Oxford Libraries listings on Copac. 'Plain or Ringlets' is dated 1860 and is a first edition in book form, 'Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour' is a first edition second state, with the woodcut to page 230 rather than 229 (Tooley) and 'Mr Romford's Hounds' is a first edition from 1865. With prior owner's stamp to the front endpapers, George C Williams, Llanrumney Hall Cardiff. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper to 'Mr Romford's Hounds' and Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour'. 'Herbert B Cory July 1893'. 'Mr Sponge Declares Himself' plate is bound in as a frontispiece to 'Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour'. With thirteen hand-coloured plates to 'Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour', twelve hand-coloured plates to 'Plain or Ringlets', a frontispiece and twenty three plates to 'Mr Romford's Hounds. Collated, the volumes contain all plates. Robert Surtees Smith was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. He launched his own Sporting Magazine titled the 'New Sporting Magazine' in which he wrote numerous comic papers. Thackeray envied Surtees for his powers of social observation.

Condition

In half calf bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with just some patches of light rubbing to the raised bands and to the paper covered boards. With prior owner's stamp to the front endpapers, George C Williams, Llanrumney Hall Cardiff. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper to 'Mr Romford's Hounds' and Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour'. 'Herbert B Cory July 1893'. To Sporting Tour Cory's inscription it to the dedication leaf also. Internally, 'Plain or Ringlets' and 'Romford's Hounds' are firmly bound. 'Sporting Tour' is generally firmly bound with a few leaves loosening. 'Hunting the Hounds' and page 288 to 'Sporting Tour' are detached but present. Pages are bright with just the occasional spots to pages.
