Description

An Important Work, Early Edition

This work was first issued under the title 'The Italian, or the Confessional of the Black Penitents'. It deals with themes such as love, devotion and persecution whilst exploring issues prevalent during the French Revolution such as religion, aristocracy and nationality.  

This is an abridged, unauthorized and anonymous version of Radcliffe's novel. Held institutionally only at the British Library and the Bodleian Libraries.  The University of Oxford Libraries note that this work was first issued as a part of 'The Marvellous Magazine and Compendium of Prodigies' volume I. 

The antagonist of this novel, Father Schedoni influenced many Byronic characters of Victorian literature.

Condition

Disbound. Externally, generally smart with chips to the edges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. The occasional light spot to pages.
