The first UK edition of this work. Complete in two volumes. 'Bracebridge Hall' is a novel consisting of a series of character sketches and numerous plots. The novel centers around the occupants on a manor in England, based on Aston Hall in Birmingham where the author visited. This novel was written whilst Irving was living in England. Written by Washington Irving under the pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon. Irving was an American author best known for his short stories 'Rip Van Winkle' and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'. He was one of the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe, and paved the way for the likes of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Longfellow, and Edgar Allan Poe. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing to the boards and spines. A little bumping to the extremities. Front hinge of Volume I is starting but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot, mostly to the first and last few pages.
