The third edition of the work, published the same year as the first. Frontispiece of Stanhope to volume one. With the bookplate of Richard Hay to front pastedown of volume one. Philip Dormer Stanhope was the 4th Earl of Chesterfield. He was a British statesman, man of letters and wit. This work is in the originally intended four volumes, which later expanded to five volumes. These volumes are based on Stanhope's letters to his natural and illegitimate son Philip. The writings were originally published earlier this same year under the title Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman. These letters provide perceptive and nuanced advice for how a gentlemen should interpret manners and social codes. These works were originally collected and published by Eugenia Stanhope, the impoverished widow of Chesterfield's illegitimate son. The letters comprise of the thirty year correspondence between Chesterfield and his son.
