What Our Customers Say...
Description
Early Edition, Leather Binding, Rebound, Uncommon
First published in 1778, it was this work which encouraged the Romantic vision of the scenery of northern England, commencing a burst in tourism. The author includes viewpoints around the lakes to offer the best views of the scenery, and this was an early work to challenge contemporary views of the north as being wild, highlighting its picturesque qualities instead. Written by Thomas West (1720-1779), an antiquary and author known for his early writings on the Lake District. The ninth edition of this work, which was an instant success, published whilst Grand Tours were popular and encouraging readers to travel to the North rather than internationally. Including a contemporary ink inscription to one of the rear free-endpapers. Map that is typically included in this work is absent.
