Complete in four volumes. Joseph Addison was an English essayist, poet, playwright and politician. He was the eldest son of The Reverend Lancelot Addison. His name is usually remembered alongside that of his long-standing friend Richard Steele, with whom he founded The Spectator magazine. Volume I contains many essays and poems by Addison such as 'A Song for St Cecilia's Day', 'The Campaign' and 'An Essay of Virgil's Georgics'. Volume II is Addison's opera Rosamund and his incredibly famous tragedy Cato along with his comedy The Drummer, The Whig Examiner and The Lover. To the third volume are a collection of longer essays both religious, political and literary. Volume III also contains seven plates, collated and complete. Volume IV contains his Remarks on Several Parts of Italy. Volume IV also contains two plates, collated and complete

Condition

Handsomely bound in half calf with marble covered boards and gilt stamping to the spine. Externally, in lovely condition. Minor rubbing to the corners and spines, and minor shelf wear. Internally, hinge to Volume II is slightly tender, but still remaining very firm. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages contain the odd spot, especially to the first and last few pages of the volumes, but otherwise pages are bright and clean.
