Joseph Lancaster was an English Quaker and public education innovator, renowned for developing a variant of the monitorial system with a recursive method of instruction and delivery. As a precursor to the modern-day method of 'peer tutoring', within this method students were rewarded for successfully passing on information to the next pupil. Printed and Sold by J. The height of popularity of his system came in the first decades of the nineteenth century, and in 1808 "The Society for Promoting the Lancasterian System for the Education of the Poor" was created.
