These five volumes form volumes XIV, XV, XVI, XXI and XXII of The Hudson's Bay Record Society publications. Comprising of: Cumberland House Journals and Inland Journal (1951-1952) Volumes XIV and XV are numbered 1033 of a limited edition. John Rae's Correspondence with the Hudson's Bay Company on Arctic Exploration XVI (1953) is out of series, and not numbered. 'The History of the Hudson's Bay Company' (1958-1959) Volumes XXI and XXII are numbered six. The Hudson's Bay Record Society published thirty-three books total. Volumes XXIV and XV regard the Cumberland House journals and the Hudson House journals which recorded the daily activities of these fur-trading posts. The journals were kept by those in charge of the posts, which were established by Hudson's Bay Company. Volume XVI is the correspondence of famed explorer John Rae. Rae explored parts of northern Canada and is noted for discovering the final portion of the Northwest Passage which is now known as the Rae Strait. Volumes XXI and XXII regard the Hudson's Bay Company, a fur trading business which still operates as a retail business group. The company was founded in 1670 and functioned as the de facto government in parts of North America for many years and it controlled the fur trade through much of the British controlled North America. These volumes trace its history. 'John Rae's Correspondence' (Volume XVI) remains uncut to the fore-edge in several places as do volumes XXI and XXII to the top edge and fore-edge. With two crisp folding maps to volume XVI. With a coloured frontispiece of Prince Rupert, two monochrome plates and one folding map to volume XXI. Volume XXII has a coloured frontispiece, two monochrome plates and one coloured folding map. Collated, complete. Volume XXI and XXII have inscriptions to the half titles of the prior owner, Michael Browne Rich of Devonshire and S Cornwall. It appears he is not one of the original subscribers. All volumes are edited by Edward Ernest Rich, the main editor of most books issued by this company. Rich was a twentieth century historian who also penned works on the history of trade in America. A lovely five volume set.
