The work was immensely popular when published, quickly being translated into many languages. 

Written by John Lothrop Motley, who is best known for this work and for 'The United Netherlands'.

Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso to the front endpapers.

Condition

In a full calf Bickers binding. Externally, generally smart. Minor marks to the boards and spines, with heavier marks to the rear board of Volume I. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Light rubbing to the spines. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso to the front endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots.
