'The History of Ancient Greece' was written was a strong monarchist bias, and was translated into French and German.

Written by John Gillies, a Scottish historian and man of letters.

Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'William Constable ESQ'. Constable was a collector in the eighteenth century, who collected a wide variety of objects, from art to scientific instruments.

Bookplate to the recto to the front endpaper, 'William Binns Cowper'. Cowper was a physician.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Joints are a little cracked. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Minor marks and spots to the boards and spines. A very small amount of loss to the head of the spine of Volume I. A little fading to the head of the front board of Volume II. Front hinge of Volume I is a little strained but remains firm. Front hinge of Volume II is starting but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedowns and to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with just a few light spots, very bright for it's age. Small tidemark to the head of the last leaf of Volume I.
