A pioneering work on penal prison reform. The second and best edition, being considerably enlarged over the first edition. With half title. ESTC no: T83449. Illustrated, with eleven plates, ten of which are folding. The illustrations are of gaol plans, the employment of criminals, and includes a plate of Bastille and of Newgate prisons. Collated, complete. Prior owner's inscription to the title page, E & M Okeovs. John Howard visited several hundred prisons across England, Scotland, Wales and wider Europe. This work recounts his findings and has detailed accounts of the prisons he visited, in addition to his recommendations on how to improve. Howard drew a particular focus on hygiene and cleanliness. He was inspired to write this work following his becoming high sheriff of Bedford and was appauled at the condition of the local gaol. This second edition sees an expansion on the condition of the Thames hulks. This follows Howard's visits made in 1779. An important work, which is credited as establishing the practice of single-celling in the United Kingdom. This was the first major practical work on the subject.

Condition

Rebound, in a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with occasional light spots to pages.
