The first edition of this work. An elephant folio. A fascinating look at the antiquities found in Benin, and other parts of West Africa. The particular antiquities discussed in this work were all obtained by and held at the British Museum. Some of these antiquities include plaques, some of which depict kings. Benin art was primarily made of bronze and ivory. Illustrated with thirty-two plates, and numerous in-text illustrations. Written by Charles Hercules Read and Ormonde Maddock Dalton. Read was an archaeologist and curtor, who held the position of Keeper of British and Medieval Antiquities and Ethnography at the British Museum. He was a major figure in British museum curation. Collated, complete.

Condition

In a quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Some light rubbing to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Small cracks to the joints. Small patch of lifting to the spine. Institutional stamp to the title page. Light marks to the boards. Ink to the head of the front board. Institutional label to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Institutional stamp to the title page, and to a few pages.
