Robert Smith Surtees was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer best known for his contributions to the first English sporting periodical to devote itself to every type of sport, 'The Sporting Magazine'. Surtees launched his own sporting magazine entitled the 'New Sporting Magazine' in 1831, contributing the comic papers which appeared as 'Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities' in 1838. Jorrocks, the eponymous, vulgar and artful sporting cockney grocer was a great success with the public and is often considered as one of the great comic characters of English Literature. Surtees produced several works in the same vein as his 'Jorrocks novels' including this text 'Hawbuck Grange', which similarly details the trials and tribulations of the sporting field in Victorian times. This copy is undated, dated using Copac. In a handsome half crushed morocco binding with marbled paper boards and endpapers. Collated, complete with eigh beautiful coloured plates by by Phiz, or Hablot Knight Browne, a well-known artist and illustrator renowned for his illustrations in the works of Charles Dickens, Charles Lever, and Harrison Ainsworth.
Condition
In a half crushed morocco binding with marbled paper boards. Externally excellent, with slight fading to spine and rubbing to extremities and head and tail of spine. Very slight rubbing to boards. Internally firmly, strained only between page 224 and 225, with the final section of text partially detached to tail of gutter but still reasonably firm. Plate facing page 232 detached but present. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but very bright and clean. The odd spot only to the occasional page.
