Written by English editor and novelist, Robert Smith Surtees, who was best known for his creation of the vulgar but good-natured sporting grocer, Mr. Jorrocks, who features in this work.
'Handley Cross' is Surtees second novel to feature Mr. Jorrocks, with this particular story incorporating chapters on hunting, heroes, rivals and much more.
Illustrated with seventeen hand-coloured plates by British caricaturist and illustrator John Leech, collated, complete. With numerous additional monochrome vignettes accompanying the text throughout. Leech was best known for his satirical illustrations from Punch magazine, as well as for illustrating later editions of Surtees's works.
Condition
In the publisher's original bright red cloth binding. Externally, excellent, with light rubbing to the extremities, with rubbing and fading to the spine. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the odd mark to the rear board. Front hinge is slightly strained, but holding firm. Light spots to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with the occasional spot.
