Twenty-third thousand. A nice edition of Samuel Smiles' popular self-help book 'Thrift'. In this work, Smiles proved himself to be a strong advocate for government reform, and criticised laissez-faire. Smiles is best known for his 'Self-Help' books, which popularised the genre. He was a Scottish author, editing for various newspaper during his life, including 'Leeds Times'. He was an advocate for various controversial movements at the time, including women's rights, and free trade. He also wrote various biographies, including ones of George Stephenson, engineers, the Huguenots, George Moore, James Nasmyth, and Josiah Wedgwood'.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Some marks and discolouration to the boards and spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with a couple of spots to the first and last few pages.
