First thus, the first collected edition of this work. A very scarce finely bound copy of Plato With Plato's text in the original Greek, and Latin. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, John Rose. With a frontispiece to the first volume. Collated, complete. Armorial crest bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes 'Leybourne Grange'. Leybourne Grange was a large country house located near Maidstone in Kent. In 1936 a hospital opened on the grounds, with the original manor house used as an administrative building. It was an institutionalized hospital, with up to 1200 residential patients. It closed in 1996. August Immanuel Bekker was a German philologist and critic.This is one of his best known translations. In addition to Plato's works, Bekker also translated the works of Aristotle and Aristophanes. This Plato translation was first published between 1816-1823. This is the first complete edition. Plato was an Athenian philosopher, and the founder of the Platonist school of thought. An important translation of these works.

Condition

In uniform full calf bindings, with gilt stamping to the spines. Externally, very smart. Light rubbing to the spines and to the joints. Spines have faded evenly. Offsetting to the title page of volume I. Rubbing to the rear board of volume V, the same to the front board of volume IX, and the rear board of volume X. Discolouration to the spine of volume V. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright. The odd spots to first few pages.
