Description

Leather Binding, Original Binding, Uncommon

The fifth edition of this work. With an engraved vignette to the title page. With a publisher's adverts to the tail of the last leaf. ESTC citation number N15747. Collated, complete. 'The Beauties of Johnson' is a collection of the most popular and insightful maxims and observations by the prominent and influential writer Dr. Samuel Johnson. The maxims and observations were extracted from Johnson's other works This work was very published when it was published, going through six editions in the year after it's publication. 'The Beauties of Johnson' shows Johnson's philosophical opinions of everything from affectation to youth, organised into alphabetical order. Johnson has been revered by some as being the only true great critic of English literature of his time. Possibly his best known work was his influential 'A Dictionary of the English Language', which had a far-reaching effect on the Modern English language. That dictionary remained the standard for one-hundred and fifty years, when the 'Oxford English Dictionary' was published. The work is presumed to have been compiled by William Cook, a close friend of Oliver Goldsmith, and a member of Samuel Johnson's Essex-Street Club. Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Goodwin & Turbutt'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the title page, 'Goodwin'.
