Description

An Important Work, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Pleasing Copy, Very Scarce

In a lovely 20th century panelled calf, imitation binding. The first edition of this work. ESTC no. T86942. Nathan Bailey was a noted philologist and lexicographer. He is best remembered for a variety of Dictionaries he penned such as his 'Universal Etymological Dictionary' and his 'Dictionarium Britannicum'. A handy guide to all aspects of domestic life in eighteenth century England. This work is displayed in dictionary form, from A-Z and covers brewing, baking, pickling, organising pantries, caring for animals, vineyards, breeding bees and using plants and herbs for medicinal purposes. Individual recipes and instructions include bleaching clothes, chocolate meringues, salting ham, cheese making, gingerbread and much more. The marinade found to Cc1v for chicken has recently been revived by modern cooks and has been hailed as a successful and tasty recipe for fried chicken. A well-preserved, very smart copy of this historical source.

Condition

Rebound, in a full calf binding. Externally, in a lovely condition with just some minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Contemporary inscriptions to the reverse of the frontispiece and to the rear endpaper. Minor chips to the extremities of the title page. Pages are closely cropped in places to the top edge, almost affecting the running title. Very small amount of worming to the bottom margin of gatherings I-L. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spot, mostly to the first and last few pages.
