The first edition of this work in book form, as it was originally published as a weekly periodical by Charles Dickens. Collation matching the first edition as called for, cited by John Eckel in 'The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens and Their Values : A Bibliography'.

Complete in three uniform volumes.

This periodical showcased the first appearance of 'Barnaby Rudge', and 'The Old Curiosity Shop', which was featured as a short story before going on to be expanded into a novel.

Illustrated heavily throughout by George Cattermole and Hablot Knight Browne, better known as Phiz. Each volume includes a frontispiece and in-text engravings.

Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. Some of his most well-known works include 'A Christmas Carol', 'Oliver Twist', and 'Great Expectations'.

Condition

Handsomely bound in contemporary half calf with green, cloth covered boards. Externally, excellent with one tiny mark to the front board of Volume I, but otherwise no discernible shelf wear. Internally, firmly bound. Internally, a few spots or handling marks to the pages, particularly to Volume I, but otherwise pages are clean.
