c1960 A Facsimile of 'Mesmerism in India and its Practical Application in Surgery and Medicine'
What Our Customers Say...
Description
Scarce
A photocopied facsimile of the very scarce 1846 first edition of this work.
James Esdaile was a notable figure in the history of 'animal magnetism', and the history of general anaesthesia.
A fascinating work on the medical uses of animal magnetism and mesmerism, the healing system devised by Franz Anton Mesmer, which posits the existence of an invisible natural force possessed by all living things. Mesmer posited that the force could be used to hypnotise and heal.
An Edinburgh trained Scottish surgeon, who served for twenty years with the East India Company, Esdaile provides an account of mesmerism and hypnotism in nineteenth century India.
