Description

Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) was a philosopher of the French Renaissance, remembered for making the essay a commonly used literary form. His influence on Western writers was vast, with the likes of Francis Bacon, Descartes, Hume, Charles Darwin, Virginia Woolf and Karl Marx taking inspiration from his work. This is an English translation of his work 'On the Verses of Virgil', taken from his third book of poetry.

Inscribed by the translator, to a Wilhelmina Stirling from C. V. N, New Year 1928. Wilhelmina Stirling was probably A. M. W. Stirling, the author of works dealing with the landed gentry of Yorkshire, later on ghost hunting.
