Initially written as part satire in support of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species, this book quickly became an extremely popular and influential work of British children's literature, following the story of Tom, a young chimney sweep, who becomes a 'water-baby' and begins a moral education.
Originally serialised in 1862-3 for Macmillan's Magazine, the present copy is of a later edition, dated from Copac, beautifully depicted by Harry G. Theaker with some lovely colour plates.
Condition
In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding over illustrated boards. Externally sound with minor shelf wear, extremities of spine and boards slightly bumped and chipped, few faint spots to spine. Gift inscription to recto front free endpaper 'To Elizabeth for Christmas 1954.' Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting scattered throughout. Illustrated with coloured plates by Harry G. Theaker.
