A beautiful collection of the landscapes of John Maggs, all depicting coaching scenes across the country, for which Maggs is best known. This volume contains sixteen of his most popular paintings of famous coaching inns in England.
Maggs illustrated picturesque scenes from a period across about two centuries, from the days before Hogarth to the end of the reign of William IV.
He was a much popular author due to his depictions of older England, at a time when there was a great public interest in romanticising the past.
Illustrated with sixteen colour plates.

These paintings had been in the collection of the late Lord Dewar.

Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Some light marks to the boards and spine. A little wear to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with a few odd spots. Plates are bright.
