With eight colour plates by renowned book illustrator Arthur Rackham, widely regarded as a leading figure during the Golden Age of book illustration. Collated complete.

One of the earliest books to feature Rackham's work and notably, not present in all of his bibliographies.

Written by the American lawyer and politician Richard Henry Dana, this work is a thrilling and vivid memoir documenting the author's two year sea voyage from Boston to California on a merchant ship beginning in 1834. An eponymous film adaptation was released in 1946.

This title is part of a series Collins Clear Type Press published, which included biographies of the Lives of Men and Women who have achieved fame by the services they have rendered to their country or to mankind.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding with pictorial design. Externally, smart. Sunning to spine. Rubbing to boards extremities and joints. Minor bumping to head and tail of spine. Pictorial cover faded and boards lightly discoloured. Offsetting and scattered spotting to end papers. Paste and ink inscription on front paste down. Internally, hinges strained but firm. Pages are generally clean and bright. Toning to fore edges, as is common. Several closed tears to pages 19, 199-206, 304. Minor loss to several pages (57, 65, 93, 111) not affecting readability.
